Door Tax?

What a crazy thing to tax...

Back in the 1800's Savannah was building new homes and the decision was made that the house would be taxed by the number of doors. This tax included all interior, as well as, exterior doors, anything that had a hinge. So, the families building the homes became very creative and installed windows leading to their balconies to avoid the tax. These windows are ceiling to floor for easy access.

As you wander around town check out the balconies, you will be surprised to find there are no doors, but the windows are quite a beautiful addition.
