The great Mico of the Yamacraw nation, Tomo Chi Chi, adopted his nephew to be his heir. His name was Toonahowi.
At the age of eleven he was part of the group that accompanied James Oglethorpe to England in 1736. During his time there, he became friends with the young Duke of Cumberland. Upon his return, he asked Oglethorpe to name an island on the Georgia coast after his friend - hence Cumberland Island.
Upon Tomo Chi Chi's death around 1741, Toonahowi became Mico of the Yamacraw. Six years later he was captured by the Yemesee Indians and died in the rescue attempt. With his death the Yamacraw were absorbed into the Creek and Yemesee nations, and their existence came to an end.
The seldom recognized marker to Toonahowi is in front of the old Chatham Academy on Bull Street, which today is the Board of Education.
